Abstract

Personality disorders have complex multifactorial etiology with social and cultural factors playing a significant role in their genesis. The prevalence and manifestations of personality disorders varies across different countries emphasizing the need for cross-cultural studies to understand these differences. The chapter describes various sociocultural factors that impact the development of personality disorders. The chapter also underscores the need to take a multipronged approach to protect children from various forms of maltreatment, as a prevention strategy against the development of personality disorders. Important social dimensions like violence in the context of personality disorders and stigma faced by individuals with personality disorders has also been discussed. Sociocultural issues in relation to assessment and treatment of personality disorders are also mentioned.
